Abstract: Managing sites in a large scale web hosting enterprise can be a tedious and time consuming task. Under an Internet Information Services(IIS) architecture, management is simplified through the Microsoft Management Console. Site creation is accomplished through a user-friendly wizard, and site management through a properties window pulled up for each site. The Web Integrated Script Handler (WISH) takes that simplification a step further. Using WISH, a site can be created and managed via a single window. WISH takes advantage of Active Server Pages (ASP) and the Active Directory Service Interface (ADSI) to provide an integrated and powerful interface which automates many of the tasks necessary to site creation and management. These tasks include the assignment of IP addresses and ports, user groups, and virtual directories. As the use of web-based applications grows, changes to server configurations and scripting engines happen rapidly. Imagine a situation where some critical aspect of the server needs to be changed, a change which could potentially impact one or more sites. How would you inform clients of these changes? One aspect of site creation that the IIS Metabase does not include is information about the client who requested the site, and the names of the webmasters in charge of the site. WISH remedies this by storing this data in an XML format, and enables access to it from its interface. The use of XML greatly simplifies and augments functionality - in the above scenario the webmasters’ email addresses could be quickly found and used to communicate the changes. |
